Representatives of Irpin thanked their American sister city Miami for its support in the first months of the full-scale invasion. The meeting at Miami City Hall was held as part of the Olympic Dreams project.
Irpin’s first deputy mayor Oleksandr Pashchynskyi reported this.
The American partners recalled the Guns for Ukraine initiative, which helped Ukrainian defenders.
Irpin was represented by Violetta Dvornikova, the city’s representative in the European Committee of the Regions, and Honoured Coach of Ukraine Oleksandra Starkova, secretary general of Olympic Dreams.
Participants included Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in the US Denys Senik, Olympic Dreams patron Anatolii Boiko and judoka Daria Bilodid, an Olympic bronze medallist.
Sport in wartime
In four years Olympic Dreams has held 40 sports camps and training sessions in 15 countries. Coaches and athletes from Irpin take part, including Honoured Coach Karen Balaian, who founded the Irpin club Dziudoka together with Starkova.
Participants also discussed destroyed sports facilities, athletes and coaches who have been killed, and why russian athletes must not return to international competition under the aggressor state’s flag.
Miami’s mayor Eileen Higgins was given the book Ukraine signed by Olena Zelenska, along with Irpin city emblems. The two cities became sister cities on 14 November 2022.
As a reminder, Irpin is looking for money for a shelter at the Mriia lyceum that will cost over 100 million hryvnias.
