The lake in the city park in Bucha is to be drained, its bottom cleaned and then refilled. Recently the lake has become heavily overgrown and has been blooming.

This was reported by the Buchanski Novyny newspaper.

This year the municipal company Dobryi Hospodar has already cleared a cascade of drainage channels and mechanically removed excess vegetation from the lake. But this did not bring the expected result: the vegetation began to grow even faster.

According to Mayor Anatolii Fedoruk, after consulting experts the only realistic option was to “drain the water, clean the bottom of the lake and fill it again”.

Why other methods did not work

Experts considered biological cleaning with special bacteria, but this method turned out to be slow and very costly. A dredger that deepens the bottom and removes vegetation was also considered.

Any intervention has to be careful: when the lake was built, a so-called clay lock was installed. It holds the water about 1.8 metres above the level of the Rokach river, and damaging this system could mean losing the lake.

The lake in the park was filled with water and stocked with fish in 2010. The city authorities invite residents to join the discussion about its future and share examples of how similar lakes have been cleaned.

As a reminder, Bucha has joined an international green recovery programme under which it wants to develop the Myrotske lakes.
