Students from the Kyiv branch of the Ukrainian Leadership Academy have visited the Bucha community. This year’s educational expedition across Kyiv region brought together young people from 19 regions of Ukraine.

This was reported by the Bucha News newspaper. The highlight of the visit was a meeting between the students and Mayor Anatolii Fedoruk.

Why Bucha

Every year the Kyiv branch of the academy brings together young people from across the country to study Ukraine. Oleksandr Matushkin, deputy head of the branch, says this trip is special for him.

I am from Crimea, I left and finished school right here in Bucha, so I could not help showing this community.

He says the Bucha community is one of the most dynamic in Kyiv region. It suffered brutal destruction in 2022, but walking around the town today the damage is barely noticeable.

What the mayor told the students

Anatolii Fedoruk spoke about reconstruction, attracting international partners and the community’s development priorities. He called young people’s interest in recovery extremely important, as there is no place in the country the enemy does not target.

According to the mayor, decentralisation reform gave communities the financial capacity to act. After Bucha’s liberation it was not enough to call on people to return: basic services had to be restored within a short time.

That is why the community made it a rule to rebuild better than before, so that services are stable and reliable. Housing became a separate priority, and the eRecovery programme provided a mechanism for rapid reconstruction.

Fedoruk also gave the funding split: about 30% comes from international aid, another 30% from the state, and the community covers 40% itself.

Help goes to those who get things done.

The city council stressed that the community is being rebuilt precisely for the children and young people who see their future in Ukraine.

As a reminder, in early October Anatolii Fedoruk stood up for community budgets at a meeting with the Prime Minister.
