Residents of Bucha district are being urged to switch to fibre-optic internet using xPON technology. It keeps working even during long power outages.
This was announced by the Bucha District Military Administration. In such a network, there are no devices between the provider and your home that depend on electricity.
A fibre-optic cable carries data not as electric current but as pulses of light. The signal travels long distances with almost no loss, and the xPON network itself runs on the providers’ backed-up backbone network.
To use the internet during outages, you only need to power two devices at home: a Wi-Fi router and an optical network terminal (ONU). A power bank, battery or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) will do.
How to get xPON at home
First, ask your provider whether it offers the service. Switching to xPON is often free of charge. If your provider does not support the technology, you can choose another: more than 1,300 providers in Ukraine work with xPON.
Next, arrange installation and setup. The fibre-optic cable will be run into your home and connected to an optical terminal, a small box with no antennas.
The last step is backup power for the router and terminal. When the power goes out, simply connect the equipment to a power bank, battery or UPS.
As a reminder, Invincibility Points are open again in the Bucha community. You can warm up and charge your phone there.
