The difference in outage times between regions is not anyone’s whim but the result of physical limits in the power system. That is why there may be no restrictions in western Ukraine, while in Bucha district and across Kyiv region power is cut according to schedules.

This was explained by the Ministry of Energy. Most generating capacity is now concentrated in the west, where nuclear power plants operate and imports from Europe arrive.

The west can potentially produce more than it consumes. Meanwhile, the east, south and centre of the country, where shelling has badly damaged generation, remain in deficit.

Why power cannot simply be transmitted

Transmitting electricity from the west to Kyiv or Kharkiv requires high-voltage lines and autotransformers. These are exactly what the enemy deliberately targets.

Because these “highways” are damaged, electricity remains “locked” in the regions where it is produced or imported. The capacity of networks that were not designed for such volumes is simply not enough.

The situation is made worse by local shelling in frontline areas and by failures caused by overloads. Energy workers repair equipment every day, but only when the security situation allows.

For Saturday, 10 October, Ukrenergo has again announced hourly outage schedules in some regions, covering 1 to 2 queues. They will apply from 06:00 to 23:59.

As a reminder, the power grid in Bucha is overloaded after supply returns. We explained which appliances should not be switched on at the same time.
