Mysticism, witches, intrigue and passionate love. You will see all of this in the legendary play “The Witch of Konotop” staged by Dmytro Rachkovskyi and Modern Theatre. Come and enjoy a new reading of Ukrainian classics!
A dangerous game with a witch
“The Witch of Konotop” is a bold modern interpretation of Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko’s satirical fantasy novella of the same name. This mystical phantasmagoria takes the audience to the small Ukrainian town of Konotop, where Mykyta Zabrokha has just been elected the new sotnyk. He decides that his high status will help him win the heart of the beautiful Olena, whom he has already wooed without success.
Just in case, Mykyta Zabrokha decides to ask the witch Yavdokha for help. But she is a wilful creature, used to acting strictly by her own rules. The witch’s meddling sets off an avalanche of events that gradually lead the story to a completely different, gloomy ending. Was it worth it?
A legendary play from Modern Theatre
Modern Theatre and director Dmytro Rachkovskyi are known for their special approach to classic stories. That is why their play “The Witch of Konotop” masterfully combines a mystical setting, subtle humour, piquant moments and dramatic tension. Striking sets immerse the audience in the atmosphere of a Ukrainian town of Cossack times, and expressive acting gives each character a unique personality.
“The Witch of Konotop” is a cult modernised tale about the terrible consequences of superstition and human ambition, a story about power, love, betrayal and how dark forces can feed human weaknesses. Come — this has to be seen!
