A fatal crash in the village of Horenychi, Bucha district, has claimed the life of a 22-year-old electric motorcycle rider. Police have charged the driver of a truck who entered the intersection against a red light.

This was reported by the communications department of the Kyiv regional police.

According to investigators, the 49-year-old driver of a Volvo truck crossed the intersection against a red traffic light and collided with a Matrix Corso 1200 electric motorcycle. The 22-year-old rider died at the scene from his injuries — medics could do nothing to help.

The truck driver was charged under part 2 of Article 286 of Ukraine's Criminal Code — violation of road safety rules causing death. The article carries a prison sentence; the exact term will be determined by the court.

Electric motorcycles have in recent years become a visible part of traffic in the villages and small towns of Bucha district: they require no registration, cost relatively little and reach the speed of a conventional motorcycle. Yet their riders often have neither experience nor protective gear, and the machines are not built to survive a collision with a truck.

The pre-trial investigation continues. Police are establishing all the circumstances of the crash, including the technical condition of the vehicles and the operation of the traffic lights at the intersection.
